This is not a ranking. If you want the “10 best restaurants in Coimbra” list ordered by Google stars, TripAdvisor already does that — and poorly, because the people writing reviews rarely distinguish a quick dinner from a long night with wine.
The angle here is different: these are 4 houses in Coimbra that already use Bitte. That means we have seen the menu from the inside, we know the prices they charge, and we have tasted the dishes that follow. It is a guide with an open bias — and that is why it is useful: we tell you which occasion each one suits and what to order when you get there, instead of yet another cold list.
How we chose these 4 (and what was left out)
The criteria were three, in this order:
- We know the menu. All of them use Bitte for digital menu, orders or bookings. We see the dishes, the prices, what sells most and what changes by season.
- They cover different occasions. A good Coimbra guide has to answer “Saturday brunch”, “quick lunch”, “mid-afternoon petiscos” and “dinner with wine”. A restaurant that wins one of those categories rarely wins the others.
- Not the obvious Baixa tourist picks. Left out are the three names that appear in every guide and no longer need more traffic.
If you are looking for “the best of Coimbra” in absolute terms, the question is wrong. The right question is best for what. We go by occasion.
Where to go for petiscos and a drink until late? Café Concerto
Café Concerto solves the moment most restaurants don’t answer: mid-afternoon and early evening, when you want a drink, something to eat without a full meal, and to stay seated without anyone turning your table.
It is downtown, a meeting place for long conversations. Good for after-work, a first date, or a break between walks in the Baixa.
What to order

- Cod pastel with herb aioli — crisp shell, moist centre, fresh aioli on top that cuts through the richness. Needs no extra sauce.
- Smoked chicken toast — toasted bread with herb butter, thick-sliced smoked chicken. Works as a light meal if you order one on your own.
- Sicó cheese and cured meats board — cured meats and cheeses from the Serra do Sicó (30 km away, so properly local), with honey and grapes. Made to share between 2–3 with a glass of red.

Where to eat well in 15 minutes? Chick'n Esperto
There is not always an hour for lunch. Chick'n Esperto is the practical answer: fast cooking built around chicken, good food delivered quickly, take-away that does not give up on flavour. Good for a work lunch, a mid-afternoon meal, or a casual group that does not want to wait 40 minutes for a menu.
What to order

- Chick — the anchor sandwich, with crisp breaded chicken and house sauce. Order the full meal if you are properly hungry.
- BiFranga — the double version, two layers. Not for light lunches.
- Ovos de Ouro — the side to share. One per table is enough.

Where for brunch or a lunch that won’t weigh you down? Legumes & outros Vícios
It sits in Santo António dos Olivais, a quiet neighbourhood a few minutes from the centre. Bright room, plenty of plants, natural light. Legumes & outros Vícios is unhurried Saturday brunch, a weekday lunch when you want to eat well without leaving heavy, or a work meeting where the room matters too.
What to order

- Panquecas LOV — oats, peanut butter and banana. The sweetness comes from the fruit, not the syrup. The brunch star and the dish people order twice.
- Salmon steak with peanut crust — salmon cooked underneath, crisp crust on top. Comes with vegetables that are not filler.
- Low-temperature veal cheek — falls apart with a fork, vegetable demi-glace on top. A proper lunch plate for anyone who wants to eat well without heavy meats.

Where for an unhurried dinner with wine? Dux Taberna Urbana
Dux is the answer when dinner is the plan — not a slot between other things. High-ceilinged room, painted mural, wine cellar on display. Good for a weekend dinner, an important date, or when you want to impress a visitor without overdoing the price.
What to order

- Burrata salad with cherry tomatoes and basil pesto — bursting burrata, ripe tomatoes, fresh pesto made that day. To share for 2, as a starter.
- Bacalhau à Brás — house version, creamy egg, crisp matchstick potatoes, black olive. Order one portion per person — it is generous.
- Chocolate mousse with chocolate salami — dense mousse, cold salami broken into pieces on top. Closes the dinner without needing a sweet wine.

What these 4 have in common
One thing stood out while putting this guide together: all 4 are houses where the menu is always up to date — prices, availability, daily specials. There is no moment when you order the dish of the day and the waiter says “we don’t have that anymore”. That is not luck: they use a digital menu with Bitte and change it in seconds, without waiting for a webmaster or a new PDF.
If you own a restaurant in Coimbra and want the same — a menu that changes in real time, QR orders, bookings without manual work — book 20 minutes for a demo or see how Bitte software works.
